Kuching at night, host city of the World Youth Championships 2026

Malaysia won two gold medals as hosts of the IBF World Youth Championships 2026 in Kuching. Adelia Nur Irwan Syazalee and Adania Mohd Redzwan won the girls' doubles, then helped Malaysia 1 to mixed team gold, both on 6 July. A girls' team bronze made it three medals in total.

Girls' doubles: a 20-year wait ends

In the final, Adelia and Adania faced the USA's Erin Klemencic and Elizabeth Teuber. They won the first game 244-181. The second was much tighter, but Malaysia held on 207-201.

It was Malaysia's first girls' doubles world youth title since 2006, MTBC said. On the way, the pair beat Nicole Layrisse and Maja Negberg 226-192 and 257-144 in the semi-final.

A big event for Sarawak

The championships ran from 27 June to 7 July at Megalanes Sarawak. IBF organised them together with MTBC and the Amateur Bowling Association of Sarawak (ABAS). In all, 218 young bowlers from 34 federations took part, MTBC said.

Kuching has become a key bowling city. It also hosts the yearly Hornbill Team Cup and the Sarawak International Open. If you want to bowl there yourself, see our guide to bowling alleys in Sarawak.

What's next

For Adelia, the gold followed a senior singles silver at the 2025 World Championships. In addition, she is in the senior squad for the 2026 IBF World Cup in Munich. Kuching will also host bowling at the 2027 SEA Games, so many of these youth medallists could compete there at home.
