A big field at Sunway

The tournament ran from 25 May to 7 June. Youth and senior events came first, then the open and graded divisions. The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) counted 713 competitors, with 208 from 17 countries. In addition, the prize fund reached RM450,550.

OCM deputy president Datuk Wira Dr Nur Azmi Ahmad officiated the finals. At the same ceremony, the Ministry of Youth and Sports presented MTBC with a RM135,000 Sports Matching Grant.

What it means and what's next

The Malaysian Open is the biggest date on the local calendar. So a home win for both a podium star and a development bowler is good news for depth ahead of the 2027 SEA Games in Kuching.

Rafiq kept his form, too. Two weeks later he won a third straight KL International Open. He is also in the Malaysian squad at the 2026 IBF World Cup in Munich.
