Motiv bowling balls are made in Michigan by an independent US company, and they're among the most used balls on the PBA Tour. The catch for Malaysian bowlers is supply. In October 2026 we found no Malaysian distributor and no local web store selling Motiv. So this page covers what Motiv makes, how its lineup works and what to weigh up before you import one.
An independent in a two-giant market
Most ball brands now belong to Storm or Brunswick. Motiv doesn't. According to its own history, it launched in 2006–07 after a customer moved production overseas. Its team chose to bring ball making back to Muskegon, Michigan, and start a new brand. Today, the company is based at Spring Lake, Michigan, and its high-performance balls are still made in the US.
Its best-known player is EJ Tackett. In 2025 he won his fourth PBA Player of the Year title, and his third in a row, while throwing Motiv. That kind of result keeps the brand near the top of tour ball counts.
A lineup sorted by oil
Here's where Motiv differs from most rivals. Instead of grouping balls only by price, its site groups them by the amount of oil they suit. That makes it easy to see which ball fits a pattern. In October 2026, the site showed:
| Oil level | Lines and models |
|---|---|
| Heavy | Raptor Pursuit, Jackal Ghost V2, Jackal Onyx |
| Medium-heavy | Forge Fuel |
| Medium | Sigma Tour Pearl |
| Light-medium | Venom Hysteria |
| Light | Evoke Mayhem, Evoke Hysteria, Venom Shock |
| Entry | Max Thrill Hybrid, Max Thrill Pearl |
| Spare | Steel Forge, Primal Ghost |
As a rule of thumb, Jackal and Raptor are the heavy-oil lines. Venom and Evoke sit at the lighter end. If you want to know what "heavy" means in practice, our guide to oil patterns explains it with Malaysian house shots in mind.
The technology names you'll see
- Power Band: a patent-pending dense outer band added to a core. Motiv says it lets engineers tune RG and differential without a full new core, and can make a symmetric core act more like an asymmetric one.
- Duramax: an additive that Motiv says helps the cover finish last longer.
- NeoMark: graphics built into the cover itself rather than painted on, which Motiv says improves durability.
These are the maker's own claims, so treat them as a guide to design intent rather than proof of better scores.
Buying Motiv bowling balls from Malaysia
Since there's no confirmed local channel, think through these points first:
- Ask locally. Some pro shops can special-order brands outside their usual group. It costs nothing to ask.
- Count the full cost. A ball weighs up to 7 kg (16 lb), so shipping is expensive. Import tax may apply too, so check with the customs department.
- Plan the drilling. You'll pay a local driller, and outside balls may not get free drilling. Learn the options in our drilling layouts guide.
- Check approval. For sanctioned events, make sure the model is on the USBC approved ball list.
Watch out
A cheap "new" Motiv on a marketplace is a red flag when no local distributor exists. Ask for the serial number and photos of the pin and markings before you pay.
Is it worth the effort?
For most Malaysian bowlers, no. Storm and Brunswick-group balls cover the same ground, come with local drilling, and are easy to replace. However, if you travel for tournaments, or you've thrown a Motiv abroad and loved it, importing one can make sense. Compare the alternatives on our bowling ball brands page and find a driller through our pro shop directory.
Frequently asked questions
Are Motiv bowling balls good?
Yes. Motiv makes its high-performance balls in Michigan, and its staff includes EJ Tackett, who won his fourth PBA Player of the Year title in 2025. The balls are aimed mostly at serious league and tournament bowlers. For a Malaysian buyer, the real problem isn't quality but access: we found no local distributor in October 2026.
Where can I buy Motiv bowling balls in Malaysia?
We couldn't confirm a regular stockist in October 2026. The Storm VIP shops sell Storm-group brands, and X Proshop sells Brunswick-group brands, so neither network lists Motiv. Ask your local pro shop whether it can order one. Otherwise you'd need to import a ball yourself, and then pay a local driller to fit it.
How much does a Motiv bowling ball cost in RM?
We found no Malaysian retail price in October 2026, because no local web store listed Motiv. As a rough guide, similar high-end balls from Storm and Hammer cost RM1,050 to RM1,120 here. An imported Motiv will also carry shipping and possibly import tax, so check the full landed cost before you order.
Which Motiv bowling ball is best for beginners?
Motiv's entry line in 2026 is the Max Thrill, in hybrid and pearl versions. However, a beginner in Malaysia is usually better off with a local entry ball such as the Storm Tropical Surge or Brunswick Rhino. You can buy those with free drilling and get the fit adjusted at the same counter, which matters more than the brand.
Who makes Motiv bowling balls?
Motiv Bowling, based at Spring Lake, Michigan. The company says it launched the brand in 2006–07 to bring ball production back to Muskegon, Michigan, where its high-performance balls are still made. Its site lists no parent company, which makes Motiv the main independent among the big ball brands.
