A 300 perfect game is the highest score possible in tenpin bowling: 12 strikes in a row, with no spares, misses or fouls. You need a strike in each of the first nine frames, then three more in the 10th frame. Each frame then scores the maximum 30, and ten frames of 30 make 300.
Why a 300 perfect game takes 12 strikes
A strike scores 10 plus the pins from your next two balls. So a strike followed by two more strikes scores 30, the most one frame can earn. To get 30 in every frame, every ball you roll must be a strike.
The 10th frame explains the number 12. If you strike in the 10th, you get two bonus balls to complete that frame's count. Therefore nine strikes in frames one to nine, plus three in the 10th, gives 12. Our guide on how to score bowling walks through strike bonuses frame by frame.
| Frame | Balls | Frame score | Running total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 9 | X in each | 30 each | 30, 60, 90 … 270 |
| 10 | X X X | 30 | 300 |
Near misses: 299, 290 and the 11-in-a-row
Miss on the very last ball and leave one pin, and you score 299. Leave one pin on the 11th ball instead, and even with a spare the best you can finish with is 289. In fact, the USBC recognises youth members who throw 11 strikes in a row but end with 299 or less. Even top professionals miss out: Mika Koivuniemi shot 299 in a semifinal of the 2011 PBA Tournament of Champions.
The odds of bowling a 300
There is no single official figure for the odds, because they depend on how often you strike. However, the maths is simple. If you strike a share p of the time, your chance of 12 in a row is roughly p multiplied by itself 12 times.
| Your strike rate | Typical bowler | Chance per game |
|---|---|---|
| 30% | Casual or new league bowler | About 1 in 1.9 million |
| 40% | Steady league bowler | About 1 in 60,000 |
| 50% | Strong league bowler | About 1 in 4,100 |
| 60% | Elite amateur | About 1 in 460 |
| 70% | Top professional on a good day | About 1 in 72 |
These are our own calculations, and they're a rough guide only. Real life makes a 300 perfect game harder still. For example, pressure grows with every strike, lanes change as the oil breaks down, and a lucky "Brooklyn" strike can save you. Still, the table shows why strike rate matters so much. Going from 40% to 50% makes a 300 perfect game about 15 times more likely.
Want to raise your own strike rate? Start with hitting the pocket every time, which our guide to how to bowl a strike explains. Then learn to read the oil pattern, because the right line matters more than speed.
Famous 300 perfect game records
Perfect games have a long history, especially in the United States. These are some of the best-known milestones:
- First on live TV: Grazio Castellano of Brooklyn rolled a 300 during an Eastern All-Star league session in Newark, New Jersey, on 4 October 1953.
- First on national TV: Jack Biondolillo bowled one at the Firestone Tournament of Champions on 1 April 1967.
- Women on TV: Ritsuko Nakayama rolled a televised 300 in Japan in 1970. Later, Michelle Feldman became the first woman to do it on American national TV, in 1997.
- PBA title events: through the 2026 season, bowlers had rolled 36 televised 300s in PBA Tour title events.
- Oldest back-to-back: at 75, Will June became the oldest player to bowl consecutive perfect games, on 31 August 2010.
The 900 series
A 900 series means three 300 games in a row: 36 straight strikes. Glenn Allison rolled one in 1982, but the governing body rejected it, along with the next five reported 900s. Then, in 1997, college bowler Jeremy Sonnenfeld rolled the first officially certified 900 series at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln, Nebraska. One pin short gives you an 899, which bowlers rank among the most painful scores in the sport.
Malaysian 300 perfect game moments
Malaysia has produced world champions, and some of them have rolled perfect games on the biggest stages. Here are the ones we could verify:
- Shalin Zulkifli, 1997: she became the first woman to bowl a 300 at the AMF Bowling World Cup.
- Natasha Roslan, 2026: during match play at the USBC Queens, a PWBA major in Las Vegas, she rolled two 300 games in one week. Then she reached the title match and finished runner-up to Erin McCarthy, 225-204, earning US$30,000.
- Natasha's personal best: her MTBC Team Malaysia profile also lists a personal-best game of 300.
Many more Malaysian bowlers have rolled 300s in leagues, state events and centre tournaments. Most of these never reach the news, and we couldn't confirm a full list. Likewise, we found no verified record of a Malaysian bowling a perfect game on live television. If you have a source, please tell us. What happens when you bowl a 300
When you finish a 300 perfect game at most centres, the screen plays an animation and people on nearby lanes stop to clap. Beyond that, what you get depends on where you bowl.
- USBC leagues and tournaments: an adult member is eligible for one lifetime 300 award. Later perfect games still go on the record, but without another award.
- Youth bowlers: the USBC recognises both 300 games and 11-strike games of 299 or less.
- Malaysian centres: some centres and pro shops keep honour boards or run their own prizes. Policies differ, so ask the counter (verify locally).
To count officially, the score usually needs to come from sanctioned league or tournament play, on certified lanes, with approved equipment. Practice games rarely count. Our official bowling rules page covers the equipment side.
Current frame scoring and the 10-strike 300
World Bowling, now the International Bowling Federation, promoted an alternative called current frame scoring in the 2010s. Under it, a strike scores a flat 30 straight away. As a result, ten strikes make 300, and the 10th frame has no bonus balls. The World Bowling Tour used it for its stepladder finals from around 2016. However, leagues and almost every centre in Malaysia still use traditional scoring, so a true 300 perfect game still means 12 strikes. Our bowling glossary explains other scoring terms like the turkey and the hambone.
Frequently asked questions
How many strikes do you need for a perfect game?
Twelve in a row. You need one strike in each of frames one to nine, then three in the 10th frame, because a 10th-frame strike earns two bonus balls. Under current frame scoring, an alternative system used in some international TV finals, ten strikes make 300 instead, since each strike counts a flat 30.
What is the highest possible score in bowling?
300 for a single game. No frame can score more than 30, and there are ten frames. For a three-game series, the maximum is 900, which takes 36 strikes in a row. Jeremy Sonnenfeld rolled the first 900 series that the US governing body certified, in 1997 in Lincoln, Nebraska.
What is an 899 series?
It's a three-game series one pin short of perfect: 35 strikes and a final ball that leaves one pin standing. That last ball scores 9 instead of 10, so the series totals 899 rather than 900. Many bowlers rate it one of the cruellest scores in the sport, because only a single pin separates it from a perfect series.
Has a Malaysian bowled a perfect game on TV?
We couldn't confirm a televised 300 by a Malaysian bowler. Malaysians have rolled 300s in major events, though. Shalin Zulkifli became the first woman to bowl a 300 at the AMF Bowling World Cup in 1997, and Natasha Roslan rolled two in match play at the 2026 USBC Queens. If you know of a televised one, tell us through our contact page.
Do you get anything for bowling a 300?
In USBC-certified play, an adult member is eligible for one lifetime 300 award, and later 300s still go on the record. Youth members also get recognition for an 11-strike 299. In Malaysia, centres and pro shops sometimes run their own honour boards or prizes, so ask your centre (verify locally).
